The difference lies in scale and complexity, not fundamental approach.
Babbage's Almost-Vision

Why This Matters
Understanding this history changes how we think about AI. Those Victorian engineers weren't building "dumb" machines - they were creating the first autonomous systems that could respond to changing conditions without human intervention. The governor didn't just control steam pressure; it demonstrated that machines could exhibit goal-seeking behaviour.
This mechanical intelligence had limits. A governor could maintain engine speed but couldn't decide whether that speed was appropriate for the task. It could respond to changes but couldn't anticipate them. Modern AI faces similar boundaries - our neural networks excel at pattern recognition within their training parameters but struggle with genuine reasoning outside those bounds.
The vocabulary overlap between steam engineering and AI isn't coincidental - both fields grapple with control, adjustment, and autonomous behaviour. When we talk about "training" an AI model or "fine-tuning" its weights, we're continuing a conversation that started in eighteenth-century workshops.
The Eternal Challenge
Today's AI researchers face Watt's original problem at massive scale. Instead of one flyball governor controlling one engine, we have billions of parameters controlling complex behaviours. Instead of mechanical feedback through spinning weights, we use mathematical feedback through gradient descent. The tools have changed; the challenge remains.
Those spinning flyballs offer a lesson for modern AI development. The best governors weren't the most complex - they were the most reliable. They did one thing exceptionally well: maintaining steady speed despite changing loads. Perhaps our AI systems could benefit from similar focus.
